Why Proper Hydration Matters

Water is essential to life and it plays a crucial role in maintaining our overall health and wellbeing. Despite its importance, many people often overlook the need to drink enough water on a daily basis.



Adequate hydration is a crucial aspect of our overall health and wellness. Our bodies are made up to 60% water and it plays a vital role in many of our bodily functions. From regulating our body temperature to helping with digestion and nutrient absorption, to lubricating joints, to aiding in eliminating of waste, water is essential.

Unfortunately, many people do not drink enough water on a daily basis, leading to dehydration. Symptoms of more severe dehydration include dry mouth, fatigue, headache, dizziness, and muscle cramps. In extreme cases, in can lead to serious health problems, such as kidney failure, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.


Intake Recommendations


It is recommended that the average person drinks about 8 glasses of water per day, but this amount can vary greatly based on factors such as height and weight, physical activity level, temperature, overall health, medical conditions, and others. Listen to your body, and drink water when you are thirsty. The color of your urine can be an indicator of your hydration levels: clear or pale yellow color indicates proper hydration, darker yellow or amber color, means you need to drink more water.


Incorporating water into your daily routine is fairly easy: keep a refillable water bottle with you throughout the day. Make sure to drink water before, during, and after exercise. If you do not enjoy the taste of water, you can add flavor to it by adding fresh fruit or herbs, such as lemon, mint, or cucumber into your water.


Tips to Help You Drink More Water


  1. Set a daily goal. Decide how much water you want to drink each day and make a plan to reach that goal.

  2. Keep a refillable water bottle with you. Having a water bottle with you throughout the day can make it easier to drink more water.

  3. Make it a habit. Try to drink water at the same times every day, such as before/with meals or before/after specific activities.

  4. Add flavor. If you do not like the taste of plain water, add a slice of lime, or cucumber to your water.

  5. Use technology. There are many smartphone apps that can remind you to drink water and track your progress.
